Question: Is it true that some people in "the South" still call the Civil War the "War of Northern Aggression"!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
There are several names for the Civil War in the South, based in part on the notion that the States held sovereignty over the Federal Union to which they belonged!.

As such, while it sometimes is called the "War of Northern Aggression!." it is more commonly called the "War between the States," or less regularly "The War for Southern Independence!."

For the North and South, the reasons for the war were different and as such, they have different takes on the war!. The southern view, that the States have greater power in deciding their status and their own laws was used, among other things, to support the institution of slavery!.

More significantly, the idea of "States' rights" today is a survival of this idea today!. But the "point" of the War for the North was whether the Union of American States would endure whole, with the Federal government holding sovereignty or not!.

To the degree that question can be answered, the North won the war!. In both historical and abstract terms, it was almost certainly a good thing!.

Yes, at least some of the folks in my grandparents' generation do, and I heard my great grandparents' refer to it that way!.(They're from southern Mississippi and Louisiana)!. You have to understand that my grandparents' grandparents would have been the children born during and shortly after the Civil War, so they actually recall talking to people who were around during that era!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I do in close company, but mostly just because I'm a jerk (and have no problem admitting it!)!. I have a certain pride for the South and regardless of why the war was fought I'll take any chance I can get to make fun of Yankees!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have heard the term used, however the biggest mystery to me is why people call it a "civil war"!. It was a war between two countries not a war from within one!. The south had its own industry, money and culture!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, but then we do have our peculiar southern sense of humor!. When we begin to talk in that way, Yankees begin to squirm, since so many of them are stupid enough to believe all the stereotypes!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sure, I believe many history books refer to it as that as well!. I had a friend who wanted an Antebellum style home (pre war) in Georgia and was told by the realtor "Sorry ma'am your General Sherman burned 'em all!." Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've heard they also used to call it "the late great unpleasantness", but I don't know if they still do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, several of my great aunts and older cousins did when I was a child, and I bet many still do so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
