In China and Japan the goal was opening new markets for trade!. (and the Europeans were already dividing China into spheres of influence!.

In Panama it was to build the Panama Canal!. This made a profit but allowed ocean vassals to have a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific!. Which saved money for companies!.
