Simple answer: Pearl Harbor, pineapples, and because they COULD!.

Part of it was to provide a naval base (Pearl), but it was also so American fruit growers (Dole in particular) could profit from their monopoly position in fruit, to the detriment of the people of the islands!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
