In response to the assassination of a German Official by a Jew in Paris hundreds of thousands of Germans took to the streets and rioted against the Jewish population!. Several people were beaten to death, jewish shops plundered and ransacked!.
The effect that this event had was that this event was used by the Nazi government to bring the anti jewish movement officially into the German government!. Yes the Nazi party from the beginning was anti Jewish, but the Nazi party was at the time just part of the German Government and it's hold on power was not 100%!. The krystalnacht is the point that made the anti jewish movement part of the German government!. To say it pushed the world closer to war is totally incorrect!.
The war was as a result of expansionism on the part of Adolf Hitler, Hitlers belief and sense of entitlement!.
The evening of which you speak was a concerted effort of Hitler's part to isolate the Jewish race!. "The Final Solution" (the extermination of the Jewish people) had not yet been conceived, as the meeting had not yet occurred as to the "Final Solution"!. Hitler was still villainizing the Jewish race and Germany was deporting the Jewish people and putting them in concentration camps!. The world looked on and did nothing !!!
The persecution of the Jewish race had been going on and the world only looked on!. The world was not ready to get into another World War over what countries felt was a German problem!.
Only once Germany invaded Poland, and other nations was was declared on Germany!.

Kristallnacht was when the Nazi dogma and propaganda boiled over into overt and widespread acts of violence and cruelty!.
