1!. why did colonel shaw lead his troops from the front, when they attacked fort wagner!?

2!. Why did colonel shaw volunteer the 54th mass!. to lead the assault on fort wagner!?

3!. explain the symbolism of the final scene/shot of the movie!.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but it was one of my favorite Civil War movies, and probably still is!.

1!. Shaw led from the front because that was the style for successful infantry commanders then!. And it is now, to some degree (although you'll rarely see a Colonel that close to the front of an assault!)!. Part of the "don't ask your soldiers to do anything you wouldn't do yourself" idea!.

2!. The 54th hadn't proven themselves in combat; Shaw wanted to prove African American soldiers were just a brave and soldierly as their white brethren!.

3!. The final scenes, of Shaw being buried in the mass grave alongside his men, shows that we're all equal in death!. And Shaw really WAS buried in a mass grave with his soldiers!. His parents later had the opportunity to have his body brought home to Massachusetts, but they declined!. He lies there still!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
