Question: Apart from the Nazis, did any other military powers hoard stolen treasures!?
Hi! My question is as follows:

Everyone has heard of the legends of Nazi gold, and many of the tales have turned out to be true (such as lake Toplitz)!. I know that, by definition, military armies will hoard wealth from captured resources, and retreating armies will often take valuables with them to stop it all falling into the wrong hands!.

But what I want to know is, apart from the Nazis, are there any other armies or regimes that are known to have hoarded wealth (stolen or otherwise) that might genuinely still be out there, undiscovered!?

Thanks for all informed answers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Presumably this is a reference to the Koh-i-Noor which was surrendered under the terms of the Treaty of Lahore not stolen, it is regarded as the spoils of war (a vaguely legitimised form of looting)!. Most of the stones in the Crown Jewels are from Africa, like the Cullinan diamond!.

The Scottish Honours (Crown Jewels) remain(ed) in Scotland, the Stone of Scone, used in coronations, was taken in 1296!.

The Irish Crown Jewels were stolen in 1907 before a visit to Ireland by Edward VII and never recovered!.

Most of the older British regiments have got silver and gold in their messes, quite often made from looted items!.

All of the Allies that invaded Germany also took property, perhaps the most significant looting though was the intellectual property taken but not included in any reparations which kickstarted the space race, and arms races, sections of this have still to be revealed!.

See Operations Paperclip and Surgeon, also 30 Assault Unit (a British commando unit that was formed with the express intent of gaining technological expertise, for a time run by Ian Fleming before his career writing James Bond novels)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The South African Government kept gold artifacts found on Mapungubwe Hill secret for almost sixty years because it was feared that it may be impossible to believe that Africans could have been capable of producing such finje golden treasures as those that were found!. The ancient Karanga Rozvi tribe who also occupied Great Zimbabwe were skilled in gold metallurgy as early as the 10th century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yamashita's gold, also referred to as the Yamashita treasure, is the name given to the alleged loot stolen in Southeast Asia by Japanese forces during World War II and hidden in caves, tunnels and underground complexes in the Philippines!.

The stolen property reportedly included many different kinds of valuables looted from banks, safe deposit box|depositories, temples, church (building)|churches, other commercial premises, mosques, museums and private homes!. Almost all armies steal when they could!. The British are a class in themselves!. They gained world power in the 16th century by bucchaneering, a romantic term for piracy at high seas duly sanctioned by Queen Elizabeth herself!. Wherever they went they looted and this was done under the blessing of the English monarch who got a good share of the proceeds; thus they looted the Elgin marbles from the Parthenon, the Koh-i-noor diamond from Pakistan; the gold treasures of Manila, among other things!.

The Japanese also did their share of looting the gold deposits of countries they conquered in the name of creating an East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere - in reality a larger Japanese Empire!. Towards the closing years of the war, Gen!. Yamashita systematically hoarded the gold treasures of many southeast Asian countries and shipped them to Japan!. Those not brought out were buried in the ground for future recovery!.

The Russians were also a different class!. in the name of the Proletariat they systematically appropriated the wealth of many countries , especially in the bourgeoise West!. In the 1930's in Spain, they fooled the then desperate Republican government of Spain into giving them the entire treasury for safekeeping!. Of course, they never gave it back!.

The Allied forces from the west aslso did their share of looting, but these were done by individual agents rather by a direct order from the topmost level of government!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
