There's several layers to this; the first is economic!. The inter-war economy was awful, and Hitler made -- and executed -- promises that helped stem the hyperinflation!. Unfortunately, he did this at the expense of any rule of law, as he gradually usurped almost complete power in Germany (the Reichstag and other institutions tended to stand back and let him)!. He was a popularly elected leader, but eventually he became something bigger!. But since he was helping the economy, many turned a blind eye to his fascist attitudes toward politics, culture, the arts, etc!.

He did it in the name of nationalism!. Just like, for a long time, it was not possible to be both black and American, or black and English, Hitler defined "the Jewish problem" on the same terms!. The loss of WWI and the Treaty of Versailles had shamed Germans, and Hitler charismatically pinned it on the Jews during a crisis of both global economics and German national identity!.

Lastly, because he could, because it literally made sense!. Hitler arguably expressed the modern era's most prized ideologies in their purest forms!. As many post-colonial critics have pointed out, there really is no difference between what Hitler did to the Jews versus what France, England, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and the United States had been doing to non-Europeans all along (outside of the actual means -- the furnace)!. The only problem with Hitler, in this perspective, is that he did it against other Europeans, rather than non-Europeans!. Hitler did not come out of a vacuum!. He rose during a time when concepts like national and racial "purity" made sense and were desirable to a lot of people !. !. !. he merely got rid of what many considered to be the "undesirables!." Hitler merely applied science (the science of his day)!.

(added later) I wonder if I got a "thumbs down" because my response lacks historical accuracy, or because it was a bit too accurate for people's tastes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the Jews were just his scapegoat to blame all of the country's problems on!. the bad economy WWI and everything else!. he claimed that the Jews were inferior and that the Aryan race was the master race!. he made up lies about them and united his supporters through mutual hate for the raceWww@QuestionHome@Com

If there ever was such a thing as "pure evil", it would have to be Hitler!.

You can try to rationalize what he did, or explain it in some political or socioeconomic terms!. But the result is often the same, he was just plain evil!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
