Well, speaking in the broadest of terms, the North was the bastion of Industry in the country at the outbreak of the Civil War!. They controlled the industry/factories, as well has had a significant advantage in manpower and infrastructure!. Compared to the South, the North controlled a vast majority of manufacturing facilities for the tools of war, as well as the railroads!.

People in the South, being agricultural in nature had several advantages as well!. In fighting a defensive war, they naturally had a stake in defending their homes!. Fighting defensively on their "home turf" so to speak, meant they would naturally have a better grasp of the terrain!. These people were raised with the ability to hunt and ride horses, which gave them a natural advantage!. also, many of the most promising Generals in the United States at the outbreak of the Civil War were Southerners, and by resigning and offering their talents to the Confederacy, they deprived the North of many of the finest generals of the time!.

Like I said, these are just the most broad of examples, but depending on how detailed of an answer your were looking for, these are the raw basics!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Union had better access to factories and industry to manufacture supplies for their part in the war!. They also had more soldiers and more equipment!.

The Confederacy was more agricultural, had lesser access to supplies and goods needed for the cause!. Soldiers were given "credit" for bringing their own horses and guns whenever they enlisted!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
