Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
colonists wanted freedom of religion which the crown wouldnt grant or allow!. puritans didnt want to be independent but they wanted to be their own religion in a sense!. they didnt want the same rules as the COE and didnt like the fact of being ruled by a king!. so in a sense they wanted independence but wanted to have somebody to fall back onWww@QuestionHome@Com

Much more complicated than just the Puritans!. Many colonists belonged to churches other than the "established" Church of England and resented its role in British and colonial affairs!. Churches were the focus of colonial social and political life and served as hubs of communication of inter-colonial news!. Lay leaders in the churches became local and regional leaders in the Revolution!. The spiritual awakening in the years prior to the Revolution enhanced the sense of particularity of the Americans as a people apart from the British and deserving of their own country!.
