Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Berlin Wall was part of a system created by the East German government to prevent its population from fleeing to Western Europe!. That system eventually stretched from the Baltic to the borders of Yugoslavia!. Hundreds of thousands of Germans were fleeing the Communist state of East Germany because of horrible political and living conditions compared to the West!.

In some places the Wall was literally that while in others it was a series of barbed wire fences, landmines, and other obstacles!. The Berlin sector was famous because of the constant attempts to get over, crash through, fly over, or dig under it!. Hundreds died in such attempts often with horrified Americans or Germans as witnesses!.

The Wall finally was made useless by the collapse of the East German government and shortly after that, the fall of the Soviet Empire!.

Most of the Wall is now gone and its harder to find much except in eastern Berlin!. Much was simply broken up but some has been sold as souvenirs (I bought some on my first visit there after the fall of the wall) Some sections are now protected by fences and an excellent museum The Checkpoint Charlie is at the site of the old US-East Berlin border crossing to show the history of this infamous creation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
