Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The main problems with the emphasis on Western Civ *as it is currently taught* are that:

1!. "The West" is approached very provincially!. The curriculum does not address how "the West" has always been interconnected with "non-Western" traditions!. This leads to a false sense of "we did it ourselves!." It falsely divides the world into two spheres!. It also ignores how Western cultures have borrowed from and stolen from other cultures -- i!.e!. Christianity and Islam!.

2!. Western Civ curriculum is more about homage and connoisseurship than it is about critical thinking!. Europe and "the West" have done some pretty awful things with some pretty awful side-effects, but students are only taught about how great its thinkers, artists, and "heroes" have been!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It ignores most of the world -- which is now on the ascendancy and thus we don't have near as much knowledge of these cultures as we should!.
