Here's a wikipedia link to learn more about the "penal transportation" that Britain did to both Australia AND the U!.S!. (before the American Revolution) for both punishment and to serve labor purposes!. It's pretty interesting to know that both countries were essentially "settled" by ex-cons! (Yes, I know that's a stretch, but it makes for good table conversation!)

England did this in the 18th & 19th Centuries as a means of "getting rid" of their criminals!. England was in bad shape, the rich were filthy rich, the poor couldn't even feed themselves so many of the turned to crime!. Jails became overcrowded with no hope (you had to pay a fine to get released, these people didn't have a penny so all they could do is sit in jail forever)!. The English had "discovered" Australia and figured it be a perfect place to ship off all their undesireables since it was surrounded by water these people could not escape!. Basically, they were just dumped there with no provisions made for their survival and yet many became very resourceful and established homes there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What Rochelle said, and!.!.!.

Stealing a handkerchief or a loaf of bread was worth 7 or 14 years in Britain's newest penal colony (Australia) in the 1800's!.

And as a side note, Australia's first police force (in Sydney Town as it was called then) was made up entirely of well behaved ex-convicts!.

Of the six states in Australia, only South Australia was freely settled, the other five all grew from penal settlements!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was called "Botony Bay"!.

Remember "Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan"!? The exiled criminals called their settlement Botony Bay also!.
