He was portuguese but he left Portugal and offered his services to Spain!.

He was a traitor and gave to the spanish all the precious maps, ship building plans and sea currents and winds knowledge gathered by the portuguese for 150 years!.

Columbus did the same thing, he lived in Portugal, married a portuguese woman (whose father was not exactly coincidentally one of the first portuguese explorers of the north-atlantic) and had a portuguese son, learned all that he could on sailing and exploring and then left to Spain!.!.!.

There, include this in your report!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Magellan offered the Portuguese king his plan to cross the earth, but the king refused!. So Magellan went to the richest country at the time, Spain!. They accepted his offer, though they were wary of his Portuguese allegiance and replaced his crew with Spanish sailors!.

Portugal produced an inordinate amount of explorers for such a small country, but the riches of Spain allowed them to finance the explorations, which of course yielded more riches!.
