I wanted to!. I wasn't old enough!

There are two reasons his campaign crashed and burned!. First, his name would forever be linked to Nixon (he was Nixon's last VP)!. Nixon had resigned in disgrace, so Ford was seen as a placeholder until the next election, nothing more!.

Second, Ford was never elected to his office!. He was selected into the Vice Presidency from Congress after Agnew resigned!. Then he became President on Nixon's exit!. It seemed almost as though his claim on the office was illegitimate!.

Objectively, the Democrats could have run anyone at all and had an excellent chance at winning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Almost 40 million people did vote for Ford!.

The 1976 Presidential election was between Ford and Carter!. Carter won with a popular vote of 40,830,763 to Ford's 39,147,793!. The electoral votes were 297 to Ford's 240!.

The election followed the resignation of Nixon, the Watergate Scandal and the end of the Vietnam War!. Ford was first appointed as the Vice-President when Nixon's VP, Agnew resigned under charges of corruption!. He then assumed the Presidency with Nixon's resignation!. As such, he is the only President never elected to the office!.

Clearly the issues adversely impacted Ford's changes!. Carter (then Governor of Georgia) ran as a Washington outsider and offered an alternative to the problems of the last few years!.

Ford also had a history of tripping, hitting people with golf balls and other gaffs!. While likable, he wasn't viewed as a strong leader!.

Carter's term of office showed him to be ineffective, particular dealing with the Iran Hostage Crisis!. In the 1980 election Reagan beat Carter 489 electoral votes to 49!. Arguably, you could ask "Why didn't anyone vote for Carter!?"
