Combat situations are high adrenaline survival situations!. Surviving by any means necessary sometimes means killing others, even if it is extremely heinous and cruel to them!.

With regards to things like the Holocaust, that wasn't cruelty, it was indifference!. It was a victimless crime if you understand that the Jews were seen as sub-human!. also, a lot of the killing was mechanised and didn't requite a lot of human action to do the deed (gassing, etc)!. There was no gruesome act needed (e!.g stabbing someone)!.

That said, however, I think your question should be "why are people so cruel"- period!? Humans are just highly intelligent animals!. If it would benefit us, any person on this planet would act in a cruel way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

People do very ugly things in war!. That is, most peoples, in most wars, do things that are entirely inexcusable by most standards!.

Killing other people, especially for ideals, seems to bring out the worst in people!. also, governments whip up patriotism and fear in their populations to motivate them to support the war effort!. That makes things a lot worse!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everyone was and is cruel in war!. You want to bring up the German concentration camps, I'll bring up the Japanese POW camps, the Soviet gulags and the American internment camps!. How about the British concentration camps during the Boer Wars!?
