Question: Why is Jose Rizal's nickname Pepe!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In the Philippines, if your name is Jose your nickname is usually Pepe!. The practice is taken from the Spaniards who colonized the Philippines for more than 300 years!. In Spain, if your name is Manuel, your nickname is Manolo!.Same in the Philippines!.

Same practice in the US!. If your name is Robert, your nickname is Bob; if William, your nickname is Bill!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because Jose's real name is Giuseppe, which is Joseph in some languages like Spanish, Italian, and, apparently, Philippino!. Many cultures use the ending of a name to make a nickname, instead of the beginning, so Giuseppe becomes!.!.!.Pepe, which is pronounced PAY-pay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I don't know if this is right, but I think they just thought about it!. But if you really need to know, you should probably search in Wikipedia or in an Encyclopedia book!.

But I'm kinda curious too!Www@QuestionHome@Com

That's what Rizal's parents call him! It's a typical Filipino name at that time!Www@QuestionHome@Com
