If we are talking about the 19th century, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - for obvious reasons!.

If the 20th Century, the longest running play on Broadway for decades, had been "Inherit the Wind" - based on the true events of the Scopes Monkey Trial which took place in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925 - (holding the record until "Cats", I believe!. It ran for over 800 performances)!.

The trial was basically about whether or not Darwin should be allowed to be taught in public schools - Tennessee law prohibited it!. From all accounts, the trial was more of a media circus than the O!.J!. trial - reporters from across the country; selling T-shirts in the streets!.

The fact that they are constantly bringing the play back is an indication of its power and timelessness!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
