First of all Black History month is February in North America so I assume you are in the UK!.

Roots is a Historical Novel!. This means that it is based on Historical fact, but may contain material that has not been documented!. An author does research and writes a story that may use fictional or real characters!.

There is quite a bit of literary license used in areas of story where actual facts are missing or vague!.
In short Roots tells the story of a people, (the underlying story is more important than the characters) Black Americans through the Haily family in much the same way that Forrest Gump tells the story of the 60s generation!. (not necessarily fact but it could very well have happened, and did, just that actual recorded facts may be missing) Many of the stories in Roots are based on stories passed down (orally) which can have many discrepancies!.

The worst thing I remember about the TV Roots is that it aired at the same time as Helter SkelterWww@QuestionHome@Com

Your teacher is right!.

Haley plagiarised a lot of his book and made up most of the rest!.

KK is not real either in a historical or in a literary-historical sense!. In no way is his story typical!. Most slaves had not been living an idyllic existence before being kidnapped by villainous white slavers!. Most had been kidnapped, captured or otherwise enslaved by black slavers in the interior!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I watched and enjoyed the tv series and was quite sad when Haley "came clean" and said that he had been unable to trace his roots as far back as Africa, and had fictionalised the earlier parts of the story!. So Kunta Kinte was not real, but the character was drawn with as much accuracy as possible to a typical African captured for slavery during this period!.

Yes he is real, the movie roots was based on facts taken from the time of slavery!. Its all documented in the hall of records!. They are able to trace his family tree to today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes roots is a true story, only it's probably been dramatised a lot for TV!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
