If god had intended us to fly he would never have given us the railways!.

Travel by water, in the absence of mechanical transport, had several advantages!. One of them is that the vehicle can carry a lot of cargo with relatively minimal effort by the crew!. The second is that ships and boats could keep moving for 24 hours, 7 days a week while crews shared working and sleeping time!. Another is that water travel, particularly in enclosed seas like the Mediterranean and Black Seas, allowed direct, straight line travel!. Look at a map of the Mediterranean and see how short a ship from Sicily to Libya is by sea compared to the same journey by land (or across the Straits of Gibraltar)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its not just one or two people, It is dozens to hundreds of people and tons of freight!. Water naturally balances out all that weight until you are at equilibrium!. Then it is just a matter of overcoming the inertia to pull the weight along!. Originally with donkeys along the side of narrow rivers or man made canals or with sails to catch the wind!.

Of course, not everyone travelled by water!. The Huns were masters of logistics, and managed to move what amounted to whole cities of people across thousands of miles of land (and mountains, and deserts)!. Basically the only thing that saved Europe against being overpowered was that they didn't have clear lines of succession!. When Ghenghis Khan died, the leaders had to stop invading and return to Mongolia to protect their interests!.

In most cases cities were built along rivers in order to capitalize on them as sources of power and transportation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

How far back are you talking about!? 10,000 yrs, 1,000 yrs, 100 yrs, or 10 yrs!? Each would be for a different reason!. 10,000 yrs ago, it was faster to go by water than trying to walk or run on land!. 1,000 yrs ago, it was still faster, even though there was horses and wheels!. 100 yrs ago, it was cleaner and more relaxing than a train!. 10 yrs ago, to prove they had enough money to buy a yacht!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Travelling by water is faster and easier than walking, riding, or driving a wagon!. It's also quite relaxing!. There's less effort going downstream because the current carries you!. also towns tend to be built along rivers so the rivers are convenient to where you want to go!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was quicker than travelling overland, especially in areas where roads were very bad, as applied to most of Europe for instance during the medieval and early modern periods!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
