Egypt has been continuously populated by a civilization since about 5,000 B!.C!. or so!. Could you please be more specific as to the time frame you want information on!.

Actually, it was bit of both!. Nasser was a proponent of pan-Arab nationalism!. This is the idea of one Arab superstate which contained all the individual Arab states in one country!. It was a sort of a United States of Arabia concept!.

To this end, he managed to convince Syria to join Egypt into one country as the United Arab Republic with the idea of others joining latter after they had conquered Israel and created a "bridge" between the two parts!.

He wanted the middle East free of external influences, specially Europe and America!.

Imperialism, played a role in his politics!. He wanted all vestiges of European imperialism out of the Middle East!. He could never see Israel as more than a British-American colony on Arab land!. He, against prior treaty agreements, took the Suez canal by force from the British-French owners!. He got cozy with the Soviet Union as a block against the West!.

On the other hand, Nasser had imperial ambitions of his own!. In his mind, Egypt was the premier Arab state!. It should, therefore, dominate any Arab union!. As President of Egypt, Nasser should naturally run the union!.

The United Arab Republic broke up after only a few years because Nasser and the Egyptians refused to treat the Syrians as equals!. They just walked away, and Nasser had no way to force them back as he had no navy and there was no direct land route from Egypt to Syria!. Again, this would change if Egypt could conquer Israel!.

In the end, Nasser's imperial ambitions were destroyed by his crushing defeat in the 6 day war of 1967!. While still the largest Arab state, it was humbled to the point that it could no longer dominate the other Arab states!.

Nasser died soon after!. His successor, Sadat, realized the futility of Pan-Arab nationalism!. He, instead, focused on Egypt!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

During Nasser's time it was definitely nationalism!.!.!.as far as I can remember from that time, Egypt had no imperialistic tendencies, but had many projects to further the nationalistic pride of their country!.!.such as the suez canal, etc!. Even the early wars with Israel were not for land grabbing, but for diplaying Egyptian power!.!.!.!.of course it failed!.!.!.!.but the suez canal is used daily, and oftenWww@QuestionHome@Com
