I don't think you're referring to the expression, but rather the activity, right!?

In that case, your probably thinking about the fall harvest time!. This was when the animals were slaughtered and put on salt to preserve through the winter!. This usually happened in early fall, Sept!.-Oct!.

You could, however, be referring to The Killing Time that took place in Scotland soon after the Restoration!. It was characterized by rebellion and general disorder!.

You must mean the game of snooker, which was invented by British Army officers, I think in India, who due to the peaceful situation there in the 1920s and 1930s (most of the time anyway) had damn all to day except fill up their time with games!.

There was no time to kill!. Everybody, Pa, Ma and kids worked from sunup to sundown!. Had a wash, ate, spelled (could not read, properly) a piece out of the Bible and went to bed!. Until sunup!.
