The overall short answer is "European powers"!.

Germany ruled Tanganyika and South West Africa!. South Africa, Northern and Southern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, the Gold Coast, Sieera Leone and the Gambia were all in various different degrees in the British Empire!. Most of the Sahara desert and its surrounds belonged to France as part of either French West Africa or french Equatorial Africa!. Angola and Mozambique belonged to Portugal!. What is now Dem!. Rep!. Congo was the Belgian Congo!. A few small bits belonged to Spain!.

You need an old map to find these old place names or a series of Wiki clicks!. Many African countries changed their names at or after Independence during the past 50 years!.

Benefits!? That is controversial! Some people would say "none"!. Changes that happened which some people would consider as benefits: the beginnings of economic development (railways, ports, business companies, commercial agriculture), trade, modern administration, a minority of the indigenous population learning to speak a European language, introduction of Christianity which tended to displace or blend with native religions except where Islam was already established, introduction of voting as a method of deciding who governs, introduction of Western medicine, generally connections andlinks with the outside world!.
