Starting in the 1880s, Japan began to rapidly modernize, modeling itself off of the world's greatest nations: Austria, England, the US, etc!.By the end of the century it had fought against Russia and won!. In WWI it was a powerful ally of the Allied powers!. However, the other major nations still treated it like a second-rate country, a minor backwater in world politics!.

The Japanese youth were infuriated by this, and a few daring and impetous officers in Russia decided to invade China, against orders, in the hopes that Japan could finally prove itself to be a true empire!.

The Americans, who had huge numbers of diplomats, missionaries, and industrialists in China, tried to get Japan to pull out by refusing to sell them oil, which the Japanese relied on to power their entire economy!. With no choice, the Japanese, fueled by pride, attacked the US in the hopes that they could be subdued within the next few years, before they ran out of oil reserves!. They attacked the US at Pearl Harbor, formally pulling the US into WWII!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Japan aspired to be the Pacific Superpower and built up its armed forced, in violation of a number of international treaties, to do just that!.

It invaded China and much of East Asia in and attempt to establish an Empire on the Asian Mainland and used its powerful fleet to dominated the Asian Pacific seaboard while defeating the European Colonial powers because of the superiority in their weapons, the underestimation of their capabilities by their enemy and the preoccupation of their Enemies in Europe!.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor brought the Behemoth of the Untied States into the War and the Imperial Japanese Navy was eventually forced onto the back foot before being driven back to its home waters and all but destroyed!. The Forgotten Army of Bill Slim defeated the Japanese on land and that, along with other Allied land Victories, forced the Japanese to retreat back to Japan and surrender!.

In the course of defeating Japan the Allies in Asia discovered many human rights violations in Japanese prisoner of War camps and many of the Higher Command of the Japanese forces were executed for War crimes in the Aftermath of that conflict!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
