Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Because the entire population of Russia was appalled at the incompetent handling of the war by the ruling classes!.
The soldiers and sailors were starving, badly equipped and badly led and the rest of the working class was in the same condition!.
They started to organise themselves into workers councils or Soviets to try to improve conditions!.
Then along came Lenin back from exile in Switzerland and by the force of his character and speeches moulded all these elements into a unified movement that destroyed the old order!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The most obvious reason was that the peasants believed the revolutionaries more than their Lords and masters and in particular the Tsar!. The First World War had placed an unbearable strain on Russia's weak government and economy, resulting in mass shortages and hunger!. also, the government was poorly managed and very autocratic causing great stress and unrest amongst those that worked the land!. The war had turned the people - and importantly the soldiers - against the Tsar, whose decision to take personal command of the army seemed to make him personally responsible for the defeats!. So in summary the Government was rubbish, the people were all hungry and the Army were ready to desert!.
In March 1917, the Tsar had lost control first of the streets, then of the soldiers, and finally of the Duma, resulting in his forced abdication on 15 March 1917Www@QuestionHome@Com
