They didn't! The last remaining troops were withdrawn from the British Isles about 1600 years ago: Constantine's troops declared him Western Roman Emperor in 407, and he took his armies to the continent to secure the claim and preclude any danger of an uprising by rivals to the title!.
After this, repeated attacks from Visigoths and various other tribes meant that the Romans had to keep their troops closer to home in order to protect the last vestiges of their empire!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Noooo! The Romans never "withdrew" from Britain! It's all a lie, I tell you!

No, what really happened is this!. Rome invaded Britain in the 1rst C AD!. They squished the local rebels, built Hadrian's Wall and settled down to enjoy life in sunny Britain (ha!)!. Britain was a rich colony - it was rich agriculturally but also minerally!. As you can imagine, the Britons paid their taxes and exported their goods to Rome, and in return, Rome gave them straight roads and nicely-functioning bathhouses with underfloor heating (and protected them against various barbarians)!.

Unfortunately, Rome had control of most of Europe - that's a big area!. In the 3rd-4th C AD, Rome was in big trouble - civil war, barbarian invasions, the works!. They were feeling the pressure of being in charge of so much land and so many people!.

Meanwhile, in Britain, you get a situation in the 4th C where they were paying their taxes blah blah blah - and not getting much in return!. There was a "barbarian conspiracy" between the Picts and the Scots in the 360s which very nearly plunged the UK into the Dark Ages headlong!. So the Britons were getting more and more disgruntled - they were sending money to Rome, and not getting much back for it!.

And basically, that's what continued happening and worsening!. Rome never withdrew - it just quietly stopped being interested in the UK because it had more pressing problems nearer home!. So the Britons had to sort themselves out on their own!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As far as I can remember, there were dangers of invaders and Rome was not prepared to fund the defence of Britain!. They stopped paying the legions and they either went back to Rome or some of them who had formed attachments, stayed and made Britain their home!.

The money issue could have been because of potential invaders of other Roman provinces and so there wsa not enough money to support the troops in Britain!. Can't remember which exactly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They had to withdraw their troops to defend rome from the Goths and Visigoths , Germanic tribes migrating down from the north !. But all in vein the barbarian tribes won in the end and western Rome was conquered and no more , Western Rome hung on for a few more centuries until they to succumbed to conquest!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
