The concept of community parks is such a widespread subject that we can probably never state an actual “inventor” per se, but rather a number of places where the present idea came from!.

Certainly any ancient society where communities had general space for people can take some credit!. Although open spaces in communities were traditionally places of business and trade (that’s where the marketplaces traditionally were located), the idea of having general space set aside for the community probably traces it roots back to here!.

The famed landscape architect and park creator Frederick Olmstead also can take some of the credit, as he was responsible for designing some of the most famous planned parks in the United States, including New York City’s Central Park!. Many other city planners also followed suit, including Daniel Burnham in Chicago and

Proponents of the so called “City Beautiful” Movement also can take some credit for city parks!. The concept of having open land that was (supposedly) free of general congestion, filth, and other problems associated with major cities during the Industrial Revolution was one concept that came from this movement!. Along with the City Beautiful movement, the Garden City Movement also provided some inspiration for planning cities that included environmental considerations!.

The Industrial Revolution can also take a lot of the credit, as it created a society that was eager for open areas for recreation!.
