The Warsaw Pact countries (it wasn't a Soviet Union only event) invaded because "anti-socialist" and "bourgeois" elements!. Dubcek and the Czechoslovak leadership had liberalised society, the economy and were talking about allowing other political parties to exist!.

Timeline
1953 - Khrushchev delivers his "Secret Speech" to Cominform and the leaders of Communist parties from around the world!.
Jan 1968 - Alexander Dubcek replaces Antonín Novotny as leader of Czechoslovakia
Country liberalises - and has country wide discussions about further liberalisation throughout the spring and early summer 1968
August 3rd 1968 Warsaw Pact countries sign the Bratislava Declaration - meaning that they would come to the aid of any socialist country in danger of falling to anti-socialist elements - a clear threat to the Czechoslovaks!.
The night of August 20th Warsaw Pact troops invade the country!.
Protests started immediately - Jan Palach self-immolates in Jan 1969!. There are country wide riots and opposition to the invasion!.
There are protests across the world at the Soviet led invasion!.

The peak period was from September 1968 to April 1969 when Dubcek was made to stand down in favour of the dull apparatchik Gustáv Husák - who reversed the liberalisation process!.
The invasion was a military success but it appalled many in the West - including many socialists and communists!. And Czechoslovakia spent the next twenty years as a drab, subservient and scared nation!.

It also failed politically because it forbade any variation to the Soviet model of socialism / communism - it made people think that ALL forms of Marxism were cruel, drab and inhumane!.
