Question: Was Bismarck only successful in unifying Germany because he was prepared to use force!? !?

It wasn't just the use of force - anyone with a gun can do that!. Bismarck was a master manipulator; able to speak the language of court to sweet-talk royalty and the language of the people to create a huge surge of popular support!.

He also had a profound understanding of the power of propaganda!. He held an iron gripped control over the press and he himself wrote many, many strongly worded editorials to sway public opinion!. Some were written under his own name, others were written under pseudonyms!. He intimidated any who held differing opinions, jailing them or working to see them politically damaged!. Many times opposing editorials were squelched before publication!. In Germany in those days there was no such thing as a free press!

He deliberately started three wars, each specifically designed to either enhance the political standing of Prussia, or destroy the influence of rival states (like France - and not the france of Napoleon, BTW)!.

His success was beyond imagination!. Germany was unified and his own political standing was iron-clad!. He stood as Chancellor under three different Kaisers!. Even they seemed mildly afraid of him!. Eventually Kaiser Wilhelm II grew into a powerful enough personality to stand up to Bismarck!. They ended up at loggerheads several times and Bismarck was finally shown the door!. Historians still argue over whether this was the wise thing to do!.

Bismarck was extremely clever, very subtle and entirely ruthless!. He undeniably did great things for Germany, but did so without morals or restraint!. I have mixed feelings about his role in history!.

For an excellent snapshot of European history of that period of history, I can recommend a book, Dreadnought, by Massie!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
