A good question requires some research, and this question did prompt some research!.

Here's an interesting fact, 90 percent of all the people how have ever lived are alive today!. So no, China has not always been so heavily populated!. The population of the world as a whole has skyrocketed since the industrial revolution, However, Asia and particularly China have always had the largest percentage of the world's population since recorded time!.

There are a number of reasons for this; climate, technology, culture, infant mortality, advances in medicine, etc!.The exact reasons for this would make an interesting Doctoral thesis!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, China has always been much more heavily populated in comparison to the rest of the world, throughout history!. There were various factors contributing to the high population density:

1) most affluent and most powerful nation for the past 2000 years;

2) advanced civilization, and very advanced in medical development (traditional chinese medicine), and the corresponding low infant mortality rates;

3) except for sporadic changes of dynasties throughout its history, this civilization enjoyed relative peace (in comparison to Europe and other parts of the world), and hence it has the longest continuous culture of 5000 years;

4) population of many European nations were decimated by the Black Plague in the 14th century, and an estimated 50% of the Europe's population was destroyed;Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's always had a fairly large population, yes!. But the numbers went to crazy skyrocket levels during the time when Chairman Mao Zedong was in control of the country!.

It was during World War two, and Japan had been threatening to kill all the sons in China!. But Chairman Mao said; "It doesn't matter if you do that, the mothers will just produce more children to fight you!"

So then the Hero Mother Policy was introduced, every mother should try and have as many children as possible (especially sons), and that's how China got populated on such an extreme scale!. It was common for women to have 10 children each!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They have always been very heavily populated!. Never this heavily, but that is simply a function of modern society!. There is nowhere on earth that is less populated now than it was a thousand years ago!. In proportion to the population of the earth, they were always very high!.
