The SALT1 treaty was signed in Moscow on the 26th of May 1972!.

Four copies were draughted up!. Two in Russian and two in English, just so that each country had the terms of the treaty laid down in each others language!.

Article one stipulated no new ICBM bases or launchers would be built, commencing from July 1st 1972!.

Article two stipulated no bases built prior to 1964 could be converted to launch ICBM's!.

Article three had stipulations limiting the number of submarine missiles, (SLBM's)!.

Article four dealt with the numbers of strategic offensive ballistic missiles, and their replacements!.

Article five dealt with technical inspections and any potential covert measures to conceal missile numbers!.

Article six dealt with a consultative commission for the implementation of these measures!.

Article seven dealt with continued negotiations, whilst setting out measures not to prejudice the agreements that they had already reached!.

Article eight stipulated that the terms would be subject to written notice of acceptance, valid for five years and also held room for veto by either party of the treaty under what might be considered "extraordinary circumstances"!.

President Richard Millhouse Nixon signed for the USA whilst President Leonid Breznev signed for the then USSR!.

This is not a cut and paste job, although I did do some research on the subject!.

For a more indepth account, simply google SALT1, but these are the main points of the treaty, set out in the eight articles!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Both countries were required to limit the number of sites in their country protected by an ABM system (anti-ballistic missile) to two!.

Provided for the addition of new submarine launched ballistic missiles, only after the same number of older missiles had been dismantled!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
