Missouri Comp of 1820 allowed Missouri to enter the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state keeping the balance of power = in the Senate!. An imaginary line of latitude was drawn at 36 degrees 30 inches that extended across the Louisiana Purchase territory!. Anything north of 36-30 was considered free and anything below was slave (Missouri was the exception)!. Henry Clay came-up with the compromise which lasted for roughly 30 years of uneasy sectional tension!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, it admitted Missouri as a slave state, but for all states formed out of the Louisiana Territory in the future, any state with its southern border north of a line 36 and one half degrees north of the equator, slavery would not be permitted!.

The border line roughly corresponds to the mouth of the Ohio River!. Abolitionists wanted to extend the prohibition on slavery north of the Ohio, as it had been stated in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, for the states formed from the territory north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi!.

Missouri was admitted as a slave state, breaking the Mason/Dixon line rule which had traditionally kept slave states further south!. California came in free although extending below the Mason/Dixon line!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
