Before the industrial revolution people in Britain lived on land claimed by some lord and he taxed them for living there!. Land was not divided into blocks owned by ordinary people until enclosure took place in the late16th century but most land was still owned by lords at the start of the industrial revolution!. People only got paid if they they were freemen and freemen were mostly trades people that travelled around doing specialised work!. People lived off the land paid taxes often in grain, chicken, cows and used the barter system most of the time to trade with other people!. Money was not used a lot as there was not much for ordinary people to buy!. Villages were self suficient small production units that lived on the lords property and were all taxed by him or did stipend work for him!. People were not much different to slaves as they had no choice, they had to eat so had to produce some thing, pay the lords taxes or die!. The industrial revolution gave them the choice to stay on the land or go to the city, and work 16hrs a day to earn money!. Worker were still not sacked as workers were picked daily from those that worked the hardest, for the cheapest wage!. Only during shortages of labour did people get steady work until unions formed and fought for the right of permant jobs!. Before the unions there was just the equivalent of todays tempory jobs, unless your boss liked you and you accept the lowest wage, you had no job!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Industrial Revolution occurred before set working hours were introduced!. The largest sector of employment in Great Britain was agriculture, where a family would live on farmland, and this would be inherited through the generations!. Often, if there was a failing crop that year, or a drought or famine, the family would be forced to move, or they would die!.
