There is really no doubt who should stand in every American's heart as the greatest American!. It should not even be close!. Anyone who believes anyone other than George Washington has any claim to the title is fooling themselves!.

George Washington was everything that he has ever been given credit for being!. He was not raised to essentially an American demigod for nothing!. The man was First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen, and he has every right to forever remain that!.

George Washington was truly, as he has been called, The Indispensable Man!. It is very rare that one man can be pointed at and called absolutely and completely necessary for the history that happened around him!. George Washington, though, is such a man!. He is the one man without whom America would not exist!. Not only would America not be an independent nation without this man, it would not have the government it does were it not for him (he prevented military coups, the installation of royalty), it would not have the tradition of selfless public service it does were it not for him!. No one who has looked at all into the life of this man can come away thinking anything other than that he was the greatest American of all time, hands-down, no question about it!.

What he did in the Revolution is amazing enough, even beginning with the selfless way in which he made himself available to command the troops, but especially the fact that he persevered through all losses and the inactivity of an unhelpful Congress, to win Independence for his nation!. That alone would be enough to make him the greatest American!. But what he did AFTER the Revolution only continues to amaze!. He led the Constitutional Convention when it became clear to him that the Articles of Confederation were insufficient!. And then he served as our first President, setting up ALL of the mechanics of government, the cabinet system, everything we take for granted today!. He had to do it all from scratch, and he did it!.

And then he left office gracefully after eight years, giving an immensely important example that has been followed by every other American President except Franklin Roosevelt!.

Britain's King George III, whose armies had been defeated by Washington, when he heard that Washington had given up power yet again, wrote that Washington's retirement from the Presidency, combined with his resignation from the military fourteen years earlier, placed him "in a light the most distinguished of any living man" and made him "the greatest character of the age!." Said the king, "If this is true, he is surely the greatest man in the history of the world!."

In that respect, George III was right!.

George Washington!. No one else comes anywhere near him!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
