Long hair generally!. Uncovered mostly, though some women, perhaps older ones, may have had it in 'nets' or held with some kind of pin!. In some of the legends the hair description sounds as if there were braids perhaps with ornamentation on the bottom!.
As mentioned, the celts invented soap and were rather vain apparently!. They took pride in their appearance and fined warriors who got too fat! And also, when people don't wash their hair, after an initial horrid phase it actually becomes self cleaning!.
lime wash was supposed to make the hair lighter, as was an ash/urine mixture (Yuck)!. Again,as mentioned, more celtic people are dark than fair, especially in Ireland and Britain where they were NOT the same stock as the European celts who originally came from germany/Austria--the British and Irish people were 'Atlantic' celts (mainly from prehistoric stock long before the so-called celtic era) with roots mainly in Iberia and the Basque region!.
Male hairstyling was also important it would seem--one of the recently found bog bodies from the Irish Iron age had almost a mohawk like tuft of hair on his head--perhaps to make him look taller for he was only about 5ft2! He must have been wealthy though---the ancient gel he's used had been imported from Spain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yup, long hair - they loved their hair, men and women!. Plaits would have been popular - I think they found plaited human hair in a bog or somewhere in Yorkshire that was about 1!.5 meters long! (Obviously the rest of the body had gone, but the plaits had survived because they were plaited) But yup, hairpins by the dozen, so complicated up-dos for those with the time!.

I think married/older women wore some sort of covering on their hair - on reliefs of the Matronae (triple female deities), when they show the "maiden, mother & crone" triplication, the older women have their hair covered in a sort of cap or scarf, and the "maiden" has hers loose!.

The Celts had saunas as well, so they must have been pretty clean (before the Romans, I mean)!. I think they would probably have been very tidy and neat in their appearance, generally speaking - I believe one great insult was "ragged nails"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In 'Exploring the World of the Celts' Simon James writes:

'Women's hair was apparently worn long!. Female burials, especially from the Hallstatt period, sometimes have hairpins in situ around the skull, suggesting elaborate hairstyles!. There are no references to headdresses or hat, although stone carvings from Entremont, and a wooden statue from Chamlieres, firs tcentury AD, shows headcloths or scarves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Men and women both tended to have long hair which was pretty unkempt except on special occasions when it may have been braided!.
Don't get the idea that all Celts were fair haired red was common and all colours were found in different places!.

According to Caesar and Tacitus, they lime-washed their hair and set it in spikes 'Like unto a porcupine' - Proto-Punks!Www@QuestionHome@Com
