I suppose it might also depend on you definition of "honor!." They train constantly, meaning they are away from home and loved ones -- this puts an unimaginable amount of stress on relationships!. They work 16-18 hour days and never get "over-time" pay!. Their pay is far below competitive wages paid out to their civilian counter parts!. Their government makes promises to them and then later will go back on their word ("free" health care benefits for the rest of your life for you and your family if you stay in and retire (I'm retired, I have quarterly premiums, co-pays and I couldn't afford dental or eye glass coverage))!. Often is the case that they are not allowed to take their military training and transfer it over into the civilian market!. Why should we honor them!? They do jobs that most would refuse for a lot less pay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You will, and have gotten already, many 'silly' answers to a question like this, something like "we would be speaking German" is not correct, in fact (if that person is contributing from America) there is only an extremely slight chance the Germans would have the capacity let alone the resources, man power or desire to conquer the North American continent, the Japanese would be your best bet and your biggest concern!. Anyway, Veterans should always be honored, its easy to forget the veterans are there to carry out orders from people who sit behind a desk, in an office!. The soldiers are not the ones who declare wars, plan them or settle them, they are simply there to a) keep the peace, b) Defend their country and c) follow orders!.

It is almost never the soldiers fault in the outcome of that war, planning forms the backbone of any military offensive (as it has been said "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win") America's veterans should be honoured, mainly because it is wrong (as seen with Vietnam) to persecute someone for carrying out orders made by a person that has never experienced the conditions of the battle they are directing from thousands of miles away!. You don't have to support the war, but you always have to support the troops, they were prepared to die because they cared enough to stand in the face of adversity to protect the ideals and citizens of the United States of America!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We didn't just offer to sacrifice our lives, but also our livelihoods!. When I was in, an enlisted man (the vast majority of the people) made just $0!.65 an hour when we were at sea - that's 65 cents an hour, about $13!.50 per day for an all too common 20-hour work day with no overtime at all!. Nobody on the outside would even work for that pay under those conditions!

Some people say, "Oh, well, you had free housing!." The barracks in Pearl harbor still bore the bomb damage from the Japanese attacks, and there were no screens on the windows, so I had to regularly go to sick bay to be treated for insect bites!. One time the EMT stopped counting bites when he got to 100, and he never got past my left wrist! (He started there!) Living there was like being tortured; every night was a feast for the insects!.

Others say, "Well you got free food!." Believe me, the food in the military is worth every penny that you pay for it!. (Nothing)

The death and dismemberment that we face is just the tip of the iceberg to being in the military!. There's also long, long separations from your wife, family, and loved ones that are sometimes prolonged by some @sshole from Washington who wants to look big, so you cruise around in a circle within sight of shore until he can pretend to land on the flight deck!.

It's more than just a job!.!.!.

Honoring vets is important, but being sure they have adequate medical care, incomes and housing is more important!. Many vets are disabled, physically and mentally, by war and turned out on the streets and left to fend for themselves!.

Want to Honor the vets!? Get with your local VAW groups and support them!. also, get on your congressperson's tail about caring for vets!.

Remember the scandal in vet's hospitals a year ago!? Let's not forget the vet! Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because from the beginning of time, rough tough men stood on the walls so you could sleep at night and more lately so you could use a free press and live the way you want!.
