Even prior to the Industrial Revolution children were expected to work, it was the factory system, instigated by men like Richard Arkwright, that demanded they work in poor conditions, for less pay than adults (a child can operate industrial machinery as well as an adult it didn't take strength to work a spinning frame)!. I think, however, your claim of 16 hour days would be rare!.
