Reading some of the other posts, I think some of them may not understand exactly what it was that the Union did!. Lincoln was not some great "savior" of Black people!.

The Emancipation Proclamation didn't free all of the slaves!. Only the ones in the states that made up the Confederacy!. So the states that joined the Union before the war broke out/ended were allowed to keep their slaves!.

On top of that, the 13th Amendment didn't completely end slavery!. What it did was define what slave labor vs paid labor was and explain what people could, or could not do in order to get free labor/indentured servitude!. It doesn't apply to convicts (hence, why the number of male ex-slaves skyrocketed shortly after the war, and the number of Blacks in prison hasn't dropped since), people in debt to the government, or people in the military or other govt agencies/services!.

With that said, I'd still fight for the Union!. They were just as racist as the South, but at the least they were against slavery (even if it was just for political reasons)!.

Response to Otis the Brave: All of your other points were good, but no, the South should not have won, and slavery was not on its way out in the South!. It's because of the actions of the North that more slaves weren't allowed into the country by that time, but that doesn't mean it was on its way out!. The slave trade within America was still thriving!. So no, the South shouldn't have won!. (This is one of the only times I agree with the underdog losing!.)

Well, obviously it was important to keep the unity of the UNITED states of America and therefore imperative that the Union Army win, but if you actually study the Civil War, there are no cleancut answers and most people would be surprised at how much the armies had in common!. Even if the South had won, they couldn't have supported themselves in an increasingly industrial world with their agrarian economy!. Slavery would have died out eventually regardless of who won!. The war really wasn't about slavery, anyways!. Most Northerners would have been happy with just reunification, slavery or no!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Union --- forgetting the fact that the South, if it had won the war, wouldn't have been able to survive solely on its slave-driven agriculturally-based economy, any government that willfully enslaves, often brutally, a portion of its population deserves to be destroyed!. If all men are created equal, as our founding documents insist, then all men must have an equal opportunity to experience freedom, including the privileges and rights it affords and the responsibilities it demands!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i am tied!. the union wanted to get rid of slavery, but the south would collapse withought the slaves working, so the union tried to quietly stop the growth of slavery, but the confederates wanted control of the southern union forts because they were mad at them and fired the first shot of the civil war at fort sumnter in florida!. the confederates were protecting their land when the union was invading it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd say the Union, in the beginning because I believe the United States needs to remain united, and, after January 1, 1863, since my personal opinions believe slavery to be morally wrong, because the Union army was now fighting to free the slaves, one county at a time!.

As an Illinoisan, I'd agree with President Lincoln being very pleased that it was our General Assembly that was the first to vote to ratify the 13th amendment!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

i live in texas, so the confederates!.!.!.
after the war, the south with like half of its male population dead and no slaves to work, they're all pretty much screwed, which is why the south economy never became great again, even to today, we see much more poor people in the south than the north!.

but of course, union DID unite the country!.!. who knows wat'll happen if we have 2 countries todayWww@QuestionHome@Com

the confederacy did not start the war, they bombed a war ship in their own waters, it was defense, not aggression!.
the war was not about slavery, but states' rights!. slavery was on its way out anyway!. this is the only developed nation that used war to end slavery!. lincoln was a totalitarian liar and a racist megalomaniac!. he didn't want to be the president who let the union fall apart, even though he himself said:

"any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better!. this is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world!."

it wasn't the american civil war!. the war between the states, the war of northern aggression, the war for southern independance, or the 2nd american revolution are all better titles!.

i guess to answer your question, i think there should not have been a war between the nations(the csa was a nation, as well), but since there was, the south should have won!.
slavery was on its way out, and would have ended without all the harsh feelings, racism, lynchings, etc!. without the war!.
many of the abolishionists wanted to end slavery, not for the welfare of blacks, but because they didn't want to share this land with them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Union Army!. Because my family fought for the Union, and if I was in the Civil War time period, I would GLADLY join the Federals at the mere age of 14!. Hahha!.!.!.I actually do civil war reenacting (i'm an Infantry Captain, 78th PA Vol!. Infantry, Co!. F) But!.!.!.there is nothing better than the Good spirit of a southern soldier!. (haha!.!.!.!.I'm a Northern Southern Gentelman, as most people at school would say =P )

The Union!. As Pres!. Lincoln so eloquently put it, "!.!.!.conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal!."

FYI: Do you know that the Confederacy succeeded from the US and attacked a Union fort first!? The South started the civil war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Naturally I favored the Union army!. no question!.

The confederates were selfish, ignorant, slave-owning low-lives who jeopardized the development of America!.

btw Lincoln rules!!!!!!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

My several times great grandfather was one of the survivors of the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac!. He fought on the Union side as would I had I been born then!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
