In 1898, the United States declared war on Spain!. Most historians blame the outbreak of war on yellow journalism!. Newspapers such as the New York Herald held a lot of power over public opinion!. In the years preceding the war was Spain many newspapers published articles that were biased against Spain's colonial holdings in the new world!. When the American battleship U!. S!. S!. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor it was immediately blamed on a mine or torpedo!. Today we know that the U!. S!. S!. Maine exploded because of a buildup of coal dust around the boilers!. This gave America the war cry "remember the maine "!.

Spain was a poor country and had no steel battleships!. The United States used all Spain's shortcomings along with the Monroe doctrine and even manifest destiny as an excuse to attack Spain and its colonies all over the world!.

It's important to remember that this was a time in history when the word empire was not look down upon!. In fact, many people in the United States felt that America should become an empire in control far-flung colonies!. After being badly beaten in this series of fast moving battles and the naval engagements Spain sued for peace!. The price of peace was going to cost Spain its empire!.

The U!.S!. Congress decided in short order which of Spain's colonies would become American colonies and which colonies would become free!. In fact, Cuba was the only colony that was immediately set up in their own government!.

The war was uncalled for, unnecessary, and completely without merit!. The war was brought on by nationalism and a grossly misleading press!. The Spanish-American war was a low point in American history!. Over the next 50 years the Philippines would be a site where many of the atrocities that Spain had been accused of would occur at the hand of an American occupation force!. The country of Cuba would be the scene of one bad government after another!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In time a civil war ensued caused by the communists, nationalists, and other elements!. This is war on the surface while secretly underneath Rome helped Roman Catholic, nationalist Franco to establish a Fascist government!. America sent some men to fight in Spain in the Spanish Civil War!. Russia sent her soldiers to support the communists!. Roman Catholic Nazi Germany aided Franco and won!. In time when the Axis were losing the war!. Spain remained neutral in order to preserve her Fascist government!.!.!.She won!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
