The Romans actually had some pretty good surgical equipment - of course there'd have been the usual saws and pliers, but they also had scalpels, forceps, cups for bloodletting, catheters, arrow extractors!.!.!. cf http://www!.hsl!.virginia!.edu/historical/a!.!.!.

As to books, well they wouldn't have had books as we know them, but scrolls!. Greek medicine was mainly centered on Hippocrates' writings, but they also might have read Discorides, Soranus, and Galen!.

There weren't very many instruments in that time, certainly very few surgical instruments!. Perhaps something to pull out teeth that were aching, and a saw to cut off a limb that was dead at the most!. "Medical school" at that point was most probably like an apprenticeship program--there were a lot of herbs and potions to learn, and what rudimentary surgery there would have been!.
