The quote is "Lafayette, we are here" said by US General Pershing in Paris during World War 1 in front the tomb of Lafayette!.

Marquis de la Fayette was a French noble who fought with the colonies during the American Revolution!.

140 years later, World War 1 started in 1914, with Britain and France against Germany!. The US only enters the war in 1917, and at sends over the army led by General Pershing, to fight against Germany!. At that point, the US army was very small compared to the tens of millions of soldiers already fighting there!.

Pershing stops in Paris and in front of Lafayette's tomb says, "Lafayette, we are here" meaning the US is ready to return the favour and come to France's aid in it's time of need!.

Pershing's army would not immediately be able to turn the tide!. However, once the US was able to send hundreds of thousands, then millions of soldiers over to Europe, Germany, exhausted after years of war, had no hope of winning the war!.

By the way, "Marquis" is a noble title like baron or duke!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
