Yes, the senate ( both the idea of, the name and its spelling ) come from ancient Rome!.
The Latin word senātus comes from senex, "old man"!.
The original senate was the Roman one, and it lasted until 580 ( A!.D!. )

Modern democratic states with bicameral parliamentary systems are sometimes equipped with a senate, often distinguished from an ordinary parallel lower house!. The senate is referred to as the upper house and has a smaller membership than the lower house!.

Its origins are obscure, but there is no need to disbelieve the ancient sources that say that the Senate was founded by one of Rome's legendary kings!. It was said that Romulus had founded a Senate with a hundred members, who were called patres ("fathers")!.

You can still visit the building in Rome where the senators have met for centuries! It is located in the Fori Imperiali area and it is really an unique experience!.
