How about the symbol of female!? Empress Theodora was among the worlds first feminists, who fought tirelessly for the rights of women, particularly those who were forced into prostitution!. She even opened a convent and used her own money to purchase prostitutes from their bondage and give the girls a chance to get back on their feet!. Maybe you could use money as a symbol, since Theodora was never shy to purchase the girls' freedom with her own purse!.

You could also use something to do with marriage, like a wedding ring, because Theodora and Justinian adored each other and were fervently in love with one another right up until Theodora's death from the plague!. When Theodora died, Justinian virtually lost his will to live!.

You could also bring in something related to her religion, but I think it would be much better to do something that is symbolic of tolerance, because Theodora was unusual for her day in that she was very tolerant of other beliefs (maybe instead of just a cross, get a crucifix that has Jesus on it!.) While the whole of Constantinople and elsewhere wanted the Monophysite Christians (from Egypt) persecuted, she fought tirelessly on their behalf, perhaps due to the kindness she received from them before she became married to Justinian!. It is a sad footnote in history that the feelings of toleration of Theodora died with her, and the various sects of Christianity suffered for two more centuries under the thumb of the Byzantines until they were liberated by the more tolerant Muslims!.

Jewelry would be a great item to bring in!. Because Theodora LOVED her jewelry!. She wasn't excessively vain about it, as there was much she did (many positive things) as empress besides sit around and look pretty!. Usually, fine jewelry were presented to her as gifts from Justinian, who loved to dote on her (and she, of course, loved to dote back on him)!.

A mirror is a fantastic idea!. Theodora was said to have been dazzlingly beautiful, the kind of woman who could cause an entire room to pause whenever she made an entrance!. All ancient depictions of her are that she was short, dainty, gracefully, and with very striking features!. Looking at ancient murals always reminded me of Audrey Hepburn, maybe you could bring a picture of Hepburn to demonstrate not simply that she was startlingly beautiful, but what was it that made her so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
