Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the nephew and heir of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef!. The empire included much of Eastern Europe including parts of the Balkans, and their were many national groups who sought independence!.

A Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated the Archduke and his wife, which resulted in reprisals against the Serbs by the Austrians!.
Russia and Germany sided with the Serbs, and within a few weeks, all the major powers of Europe were at war!.

It is highly unlikely that Princip and his associates intended to start a world war - no doubt in their idealistic visions they saw the Serbs revolting in sympathy and throwing off the Austrian yoke!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The political objective of the assassination was to break Austria-Hungary's south-Slav provinces off so they could be combined into a Greater Serbia or a Yugoslavia!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To kick start the first world war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
