First operational jet fighter!. Used by Germany in WW2!.

It was a superior aircraft, in both airspeed and firepower!. Aside from the jet engines, another big breakthrough was its use of a swept wing!. However it's maintenance costs were high, and the Germans were not able to produce them in sufficient numbers to change the course of the war!.
The ironic thing is that they had the fighter design ready to go for about 2 years, but didn't put it into production because they wanted a bomber instead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

righteous has the basics, the ME 262 had been on the drawing board sense before the start of ww2 but in fighting between Hitlers generals, engineering and supply problems, led to the delay of the ME being put into service, and wasn't until the 3rd prototype that it was considered a true jet aircraft, only 9 mo!.s ahead of the British Gloster Meteor, and by that time all was but lost for Hitler anyway, although a formidable fighter the ME had some serious airframe and engine issues, as compression stalls were common and deadly at low speeds, where as the Mustangs added nitrous to boost there speed to contend with the newcomer and still retained there low speed capability's!. however the ME's entrance into the war spelled the quick demise of the piston engine fighter, us Yanks dident take long to figure that one out did we!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
