Two things, both very simple:

First, he came up with a rule that those who would not work could not eat!. Suddenly people took an increased interest in food production!.

Second, he started the colonists working on growing tobacco!. It was more lucrative than searching for gold, thereby rendering the colony viable (meaning it had a purpose to continue)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
