Basically, they set up missions that gave refuge to explorers and fur trappers!. They created the roots of French culture west of the small villages outside Nouveau France, extending known lands through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and down the Mississippi!. Joliet and Marquette, in particular, were explorers in their own right who created French settlements all the way through the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi!.
