Let's give some background!.

Imperial Russia was not udner the Soviets but they were udner a monarchy system udner a Tzar!. The Tzar who was leader during that time was Nicholas II!. Who was born in 1868, hence rather young!. He was as a child, friendly, gentle, and fluent in languages of English, French and Germany and obviously of course Russian!.

However when he grew older, he had a *cough* more masculine atitude, such as "shooting", sports and horse riding and also growing a temper!. A temepr which is bad for ruling, eh!? Especially during the Commnuist times!.

His tutor, which plays an improtant part in a child's upbringing was a conservative!. Which is bad because during this time, the monarchy is unpopualr because the peasents were poor, little food and the Russians were behind in technolgoy!. They still dressed medievally!. Whilst the Russians were also losing in it's recent wars!. The people were upset, hence the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks and later known as Communist (Bolsheviks)!. Thus, the Tzars cared little about the people and the country got in worse situation!.

He also beleived he should rule harshly on the people as such, Nicholasd (lets called him nick, my hand getting tired), nick became less helpful to the people!. He became Tzar at 26!.

The conditions during this time were bad for workers and most of the classes except the higher middle and upper class!. Thus Russian suffered internal problems with the Commnuist forces and sympathisers a large group until around 1907, udner Stolypin who made rgeat reforms for the Tzars, Russia improved!. People became disintersted in Communism!. This ended however in 1911 when Stolypin was shot by a terroist (communist)!. By the way sorry for the briefness, but this isn't really your question, I am jsut giving a summary of the backgroudne evnts, I skilled bloody SUnday and stuff but I am sure you could search it on google!.

Before Stolypin there was however another minister called Plehve!. During the time prior to WWI, Russia was exploiting China and Japan was as well!. Relations became poor!. Plehve belived a war would help Russia stabilsie control over China and help settle some problems with the poor angry peasents!.The russians however were etchnoloigcally behind and suffered a defeat!. Hence humilation and only mroe angry palced towards the Tzars (monarchy)!.

Anyway, generally, the upper class wished to conserve their pwoer over a alrge majority of poor people!. It did not help with Nick's wife being an autocrat, and that he had poor advisors besides a few like Stolypin!. Rasputin for example is a abd advisor who, known as the Mad Monk, worsened problems for Nick and made the peasents even angrier to the monarchy!.

So the situation is Russia is like this!.
- Poor, angry majority of people
- Arrogant and autocrat upper class
- technologically behind
- Many uprisings and anti-monarchy groups like bolsheviks and mensheviks
- Suffered a defeat from the Japs which meant humiliation
- Lost it'sinterests (China) and many foreign ivnestments such as it's railway company in China

So what happened is Russia after it's defeat from Japan began to turn back to Europe!.Knwoing it was weak, it agreed with Britain to share control over Persia and Russia itself would not expand into Afghanistan hence ending it's argument and improving relations!. This occured in 1907!.

the same year, (1907) with good relations both britain and russia jonibed france in the alliance known as the Triple Entente which was to be a sort of defnse and alliacne to counter, the storng Germany udner Kaiser William II!. (Gemrnay during this time was very strong and it was untied with Austria, Austo empire)

The Austraians wanted to have Serbia and the Balkan region, but it had no reaosn to fight, Gemrnay supproted Austria!. Austrian crown prince gets kileld by Serbian nationalist!. Austria declares war on Serbia!. Russia declares war on Austria!. Germany declares war on Russia!.

the real reason for WWi for Russians, was to united Russia, and thus help stabilsie the monarchy because there was much unrest in the lwoer classes and it was scraed of an overthrow if it could not unite the people/!.

So Tzar Nicholas used this as an excuse to fight germany and gain some land but the real motive to unite his people and remain udner control!. People flocked to him and many commnusits joni the govt!. agaisnt Germany instead of agasinst the monarchy for the time being!.

Russia's aims were perhaps
- Gain some land from dfeeated Germany and buffer states such as Poland
- Help strengthen relations between France and England
- Defeat traditonal enemy (germany)
- Unite the people as I mentioned
- Russia had large army, they were sure to win, so it would be a quick war with much to gain
- Gain alrge patriotism
- Improve conditionsWww@QuestionHome@Com
