It may have taken him 4 years- but there is some discussion that he never finished it!

Mona (poor Mona) has no eyebrows and no fingernails!. If you look at close-ups, you can see that the fingernails are outlined, but never finished!.

The person who paid for the painting never got it- Leonardo carried it with him until the end of his life, when it became the property of the King of France, and it is still in France today!.

Oh- Mona used to have a necklace that Leonardo painted over- x-rays show that!.
