Mummification is a process by which a corpse is dried out and preserved over relatively long periods of time!. Many ancient civilizations (most famously the ancient egyptians) deliberately applied techniques to the bodies of important dead people (and sometimes even important dead animals) so that they would dry out and be preserved after being placed in tombs!. The ancient egyptian idea was that the body should be preserved in order for the soul to have a proper afterlife, while other civilizations that practiced mummification had slightly different ideas about why it should be done!. In the case of the egyptians, the techniques to mummify a person involved taking out certain internal organs (the heart and liver I believe were removed and placed elsewhere in the tomb, while the brain was pulled out through the corpse's nose and discarded as it was thought to have no real medical or religious purpose), then applying salt and various preservative spices to many parts of the corpse, and finally wrapping it in strips of cloth or paper and putting it in a tomb (often inside a coffin or sarcophagus)!.
