The English didn't "colonize" it!.
There was already a growing Dutch settlement there before the English came on to the scene!.
Quite a lot of Native American towns and villages!.
A good harbor!.
A decent port for ships getting out of the harsh winter weather!.
Even before the Dutch settled there, fishing ships would harbor there and trade with the local population!.!.!. and sit out the winter storms!.
That was how it was "discovered" by the Dutch as a possible good place to settle!.
There was fresh water coming down from the river, a cozy, protected harbor, excellent fishing, plenty of game and hard wood forests for lumber!.
The native population had seen this and "colonized" the area well before Europeans!.
The native population of the New York area had villages, large ones, buildings, store houses, meeting halls, smoke houses for fish and game, planted crops, cleared fields for growing crops!.
These natives were part of the The Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the "League of Peace and Power", or the "People of the Longhouse"!.!.!.!.very similar to the Longhouse style of the Norsemen!.
They had a controlling judicial-like government AND a Constitution, strikingly similar to the US Constitution, with a strong set of laws and jurisdiction and assigned hierarchy of power and divisions!.
It was VERY MUCH "colonized" BEFORE the white man settled there!.

If this question is for school, it very well might be a trick question!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The English didn't colonize it, the Dutch did in 1625!. The English captured the city in 1664, but lost it again in 1673!. The city was then renamed New Orange!. The English took possession of New Amsterdam (the entire Dutch territory, not just the city) permanently in 1674!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
